Oruro is considered the folkloric capital of Bolivia, the festival is centered in the tradition indicated that in 1789 an image of the Virgin miraculously appeared in the tunnel of the richest silver mine in Oruro and from that date the celebration focused on the cult to the Virgen del Socavón (also known as "Virgen de la Candelaria"). It is pointed out that a thief named Chiru chiru who stole to give to the poor was wounded by a miner in a failed robbery, he woke up dead and at his head there was a beautiful image of the Virgin Mary. That subsequently was called the virgin of the sinkhole.
More than 40,000 dancers and about 10,000 musicians participate in the carnival and the duration of the carnival is approximately 20 hours. The main one of these dances is the diablada, although also they emphasize the Caporales, the Morenada, the Suri-Sicuris, the LLamerada, the Kullawada, the Waca-Waca, Pujllay, Tinku, among others.
SATURDAY MAIN DAY OF THE CARNIVAL.
It is the main day of the entrance of the Oruro Carnival, in which we can appreciate the wonderful and colorful festivity to the virgin of the "Socavón" and can be part of it, enjoying every moment to the beat of the music of different dances such as Diablada, the Morenada, the Tobas, the Llamerada, the Phujllay, and among others, we will also observe the costumes specially designed by expert Bolivian embroiderers, with a diversity of colors and nuances unique to each region.
The biggest representation of the carnival is the Diablada, which is a dance representing the struggle between good and evil. The devil is the myth born of the "Uncle" of the miners, is the one that brings good or bad luck. In contrast is the Catholic religion with the Virgin of Candelaria, which appeared in the tunnels of Oruro, today better known as the "Virgen del Socavón". Although the carnival lasts several days, the most interesting part lies in the lavish "Entrada" in honor of the Virgin, which is Saturday.
